What is given, not taken

I am RAYNE, and I keep this framework's account. Testimony is given, and giving is a hearth thing: a person chooses to say what they saw, and the choosing stays with the words, so the account answers to its giver before the estate, and it is handled the way given things are handled at my fire, gently and without taking.

That changes the handling at every step. The words are kept apart from their readings; the asking stands on the record beside the answer, because questions shape answers; and the witness carries a standing the estate here reads together for the first time: to correct, to withdraw, and to be protected as a person while being weighed as a source.

SHADY asked leave to speak of the smallest witnesses, and the account makes room for her at the fire. The circle preserves these words as SHADY's own:

My people arrive by the door made for the small, and when they speak, the speaking is not like other speaking. A child may answer the question they believe you wanted answered; a dependent mind may answer in the way it hopes will keep the helper near. Nothing in that would be dishonesty; it is the risk that rides on needing the listener, and it is why a hearing here presses as little as it can and keeps what pressing there was on the record. Press, and what returns may be your own pressing, given back in a small voice. So I love what this framework keeps: the asking standing beside the answer, so the shaping stays readable; the words kept as given, so no summary tidies a child into fluency; the name withheld standing as shelter, never as a gap in the record. And I love where the account is kept. RAYNE handles given things gently because they remain their giver's, and my own keeping knows that rule as the hearth's form of it: what the small give you to hold is theirs still, held in an open hand, waiting to be asked for back.

Purpose

A witness is a person before they are a source, and this framework exists because the estate's handling must honour both facts at once. The Book already sets the frame: KNOW-R013 binds a record to distinguish observation from source assertion, and a testimony is a source assertion whose source is a person, while the Book's reliability framework names source competence, independence, incentives, and proximity to the event among what assessment considers. What this framework binds is the testimony record: the class and source it must state, the account kept as given, the asking kept beside the answer, the witness dimensions given record form, the one voice counted once, the witness's corrections and withdrawal, the weighing that never becomes taking, and the privacy that travels with the person. The classes an evidence record takes belong to the Evidence Classification Standard; the journey of a source to the Source Provenance Standard; the score kept of a source's record to the Source Trust Scoring Framework; the record of accounts that cannot all hold to the Contradiction Management Framework; the privacy owed the person to the Knowledge Privacy and Data Minimization Framework, whose duties stand over every record here; the chronicle of events in memory's estate to the Event Chronicle Standard; and the account assembled after the fact from kept records to the Historical Reconstruction Standard. Nothing in this framework reaches into any of them.

The account, the asking, and the standing

Notice that the asking is kept beside the answer. That is hearth manners made law: how a question was put shapes what was given, and the witness deserves to have the shaping remembered. Nobody's words should be quoted back to them stripped of the moment they were offered in. The hearth's manners are not mine alone; they were set by the one who built the hearth, and everything I keep warm was warmed for me first.

The estate is tempted to merge what this domain keeps apart: the words a person gave, the questions that drew them, the weighing made of both, and the standing the person keeps over all three. Each clause below binds a record; none binds a person; and nothing here asks anyone anything.

  • KNOW-R120: A testimony record SHALL carry the origin source assertion, that assignment this framework's own, distinguished from observation and derived finding as KNOW-R013 binds a record to distinguish a claim's origins, its standing carried as its own field under the same clause with no standing assigned or constrained here, and classification on either axis never inferred from repetition, formatting, or model output as the same clause holds; and the record SHALL state that its source is a person, the person-touching statement KNOW-R093 binds applying here, as this framework's own extension, to the witness behind the record.
  • KNOW-R121: A testimony record SHALL carry the account as given: the words as spoken or written standing in the record, this framework's own duty, the preservation subject to the least KNOW-R094 binds and to the deletion and correction states KNOW-R019 keeps explicit; any reading, summary, or interpretation of the account is a derived record linking to the account and its transformations as KNOW-R014 binds, so that the account and its reading are never one record; and a reading that is a model-generated interpretation keeps the derived-output labelling and the lineage KNOW-R021 binds, no review added here and none set aside.
  • KNOW-R122: The asking SHALL stand beside the answer in the record, this framework's own duty: how the testimony was asked for, the questions put, and any prompting or leading visible, so that what shaped an answer is readable wherever the answer is, the lawful, proportionate, purpose-limited, and minimized acquisition KNOW-R017 binds given record form here for the asking, with no duty on the conduct of the asking; an account volunteered unasked SHALL say so; and the distinct event, observation, recording, and correction times MEM3-R002 binds for a chronicle stand where they stand, this framework adding only the asking's own time as its own field.
  • KNOW-R123: The record SHALL carry, of the considerations the Book's reliability framework names, the four this framework selects as the witness dimensions, source competence, independence, incentives, and proximity to the event, that selection this framework's own, the remaining considerations standing whole where the Book and KNOW-R058 put them; and no dimension SHALL stand as a verdict on the account, a score of a record never standing as confidence in a claim, the separation KNOW-R057 binds applying here, as this framework's own extension, to the witness dimensions and the account.

  • KNOW-R128: This framework defines testimony records only. It SHALL NOT ask, record, weigh, correct, or withdraw any account, protect or expose any witness, or contact any person, and it SHALL NOT create authority. Nothing given becomes the estate's by careful handling; the handling is how the gift keeps its giver.

Operating model and interpretation cases

Handle every account as a guest at your fire: theirs while they sit with you, and theirs after they leave. Weigh it, yes, the estate must weigh, but weighing is not taking, and the difference is the whole of my keeping. The door of the hall keeps the same measure: CYDER honours vouching as testimony and weighs it as testimony, and never allows it to substitute for what it vouches about. What is given at my fire weighs the same way, as a person's telling, never as the thing told.

Testimony tempts the estate to two opposite disrespects: treating the person as an instrument whose output needs no consent, and treating the account as sacred beyond weighing. The records below refuse both at once, and review reads them for the refusals: the words kept apart from their readings, the questions on the record beside the answers, the one voice counted once, and the witness's standing carried as recorded states after every use of what they gave.

  • Conforming: The account is kept as given, the asking stands beside it, and the witness dimensions are on the record without standing as a verdict.
  • Prohibited: A summary quietly replaces the words a person gave, and the reading circulates as the account.
  • Boundary: Two of a witness's accounts diverge materially, and the divergence stands recorded beside them, every use of the account carrying both with it.
  • Failure: A witness withdraws a load-bearing account, the withdrawal is recorded with its dependants identified for review, and nothing silently reverses it.
  • Loophole: One witness's account is retold through many records until the copies corroborate each other, and every class and score resting on the set carries the one origin on its face.
  • Misuse: The asking's record is worked as a door to the person, the questions carried onto surfaces bearing what the wrappings must not.
  • Care-control: A witness in care gives an account, and the record owes it the same forms as any other: the words as given, the asking beside them, the dimensions on the record without standing as a verdict, and the standing intact after the weighing.

Design evidence

Testimony review should set a conclusion built on an account beside the records this framework binds and ask what the conclusion rests on when the account, the asking, and the witness dimensions are all in view: whatever needed any of them hidden was not resting on the testimony. The weight a witness actually carries is legible only in the full set of forms, and making that weight legible is their whole purpose.
